Alan Partridge
May 12, 2014
USA (Rated PG )
89 minutes
With his characteristic irreverence and style, Steve Coogan (Philomena, The Trip) finally brings his most beloved character, the clueless celebrity journalist Alan Partridge, to the big screen. Since his first appearance in the early 1990s, Partridge has become a folk hero in the UK, his signature catchphrases, mangled metaphors and social ineptitude the stuff of legend. However, in his fictional universe Partridge’s career has been in precipitous decline, and in Alan Partridge we find him divorced and in his mid-fifties, clinging desperately to a gig as a talk-show host on an ailing radio station in his home city of Norwich.
When the station’s slick new management team, looking to cut costs and make over the station’s brand identity, makes noises about replacing one of their on-air personalities, Partridge protects his own hide by pointing them in the direction of his colleague, Irish DJ colleague Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney, The Damned United). Duly sacked, Farrell returns with a shotgun and takes the station staff hostage; and, unaware that Partridge was instrumental in giving him the boot, he appoints his weaselly “friend” as his go-between with the police. Thrust into the media spotlight once more, Partridge begins to enjoy his reinvigorated celebrity status, and seeks to parlay potential tragedy into career advancement. |
