June 9, 2008
(Canada) Rated 14A
93 minutes
Winner of the NFB Best Canadian Documentary Award at the Vancouver Film Festival and selected as part of Toronto International Film Festival Group's Canada's Top Ten 2007 series, Up the Yangtze also screened at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and has been nominated for a Jutra award. Yung Chang's luminous documentary focuses on the people who live alongside China's Yangtze River, many of whom are being uprooted as a result of the Three Gorges Dam project.
The central focus here is on two teenagers, Cindy and Jerry, who are hoping to secure employment on a tour boat which caters to wealthy Westerners. Shuttling expertly between life above and below decks, the film contrasts the idyllic, bucolic fantasy being presented to the Westerners (they will be the last people to see the river as it once existed) and the people who serve them.
